This was Million Dollar Baby's third foal and first jack. For some unknown reason she rejected this baby. She was fine with her first two so we are not sure what happened. The birth and the delivery were nornal and uneventful. The only thing we can think of is that she was in a lot of pain during the pre-labor stage: biting and kicking her sides and pawing. We have heard that sometimes when the birth is extremely painful they may reject the foal. But we may never know the true reason. I will be posting the birth video soon. Usually Joe aways assists in the birth but this time she had the baby almost all the way delivered before Joe made it to her side to help. We honestly have no idea if this made any difference.
We have had several maiden jennets try to reject foals that we have successful had them accept after drugs, hobbles, etc. but no matter what we tried this mom refused to take her foal.
Million Dollar Baby had her first two foals with absolutely no problems at all. They were both jennets and this was a jack but, again, we do not think that was a factor. She had a completely normal gestation other than being a few weeks late. We will probably give Baby one more chance at being a mom and if we have problems again we will be placing her as a pet.
The new baby is doing just fantastic. We milked Baby all night long every couple of hours and gave the baby plenty of colostrum using our Udderly EZ Milker that turned out to be a real life saver. The baby had fresh milk right out of mom in less than two minutes. We continued doing this until the twelve hour window of the foal obsorbing colustrum had passed. (We actually gave the foal mom's milk for sixteen hours and then we switched to foal-lac formula and sent him home with his new mom, Katie.)
Katie Randall, picked the baby up that night and is now hand raising him on a bottle. We will post updates soon.
Update: At three weeks of age Katie was able to have one of her jennets that lost her foal accept this baby. They adore each other and Bugsy is thriving, growing and doing just great.
Final update: This baby unfortunately had serious health problems and he had to be humanly euthanized by Katies' vet. It seems that his dam knew from the start that this baby would not survive. Million Dollar Baby birthed a foal fourteen months later on 9/23/22, a healthy black jack, that she is proudly raising. Mother Nature never ceases to amaze us.
