Our foaling season this year has been awesome. With each birth we seem to have been blessed with unique and absolutely gorgeous foals.
This is Felina’s second baby, her first, Radiance, is now a Junior Herd Sire
at Itsy Bitsy Burro Co. They are more than pleased with him.
Hissy looks exactly like her brother, Ray, except she only has a few tiny hairs
for a star and Ray has a large star. In fact, she looks so much like him that
we would have named her Red Ray if we had not alreeady used that name.
On June
5th, 2009 Felina started the day out as if she was in early labor and was placed
in a stall. That did not make her happy so as she continued showing more and
more signs of labor so we moved her to the birthing stall. She paced, and paced,
and was very agitated to be so confined. We were unable to put her buddy in the
next stall because we had filled that stall with hay a few days before. I went
in her stall to sit with her and if I tried to leave she threw a fit. Those
watching on Mare Stare were talking about how unhappy she seemed to be and wondered
what was taking place. One person sent me this text message, “Felina
is so spoiled, she even has to have her mom in the delivery room with her. What
a hissy fit she
is throwing!" That is when we knew what we would name this precious new baby.
When she was born Joe and I could not believe out eyes. This tiny little girl
was wearing the most vivid red coat we have ever seen on any of our newborn foals.
I was the one jumping around and throwing the “hissy fit” over her rare beauty.
Weighing only 21 lbs, and standing mere 20 ¼ inches tall she spun her way right
into our hearts that very moment. Her little legs are strong and straight, and
her bottom is full and round. Hissy instantly became a little lap donkey and
her adoring personality let us know she was something very special. Felina is
such a good mother and never worried one bit about all the “fits” taking place
over her newborn beauty. In fact, we had farm visitors that very day and all
of us just sat in the stall floor and played with Felina and Hissy. When standing
up she only comes to Joe’s knees. She resembles a stuffed pull toy…..too beautiful
to be real.
Once again, we are sorry to say, “Hissy is not for sale”. The Lord has blessed
us this year with so many special jennet foals that we thought it might be time
to start keeping a few for ourselves. Don't worry..we will start selling our
jennet foals again next year!

We were so happy to watch Roxanne have a successful foaling of this most unusual and tiny frosted jack since she aborted her first foal at 10 months for no apparent reason. She did not disappoint us as she presented us with this tiny, sweet, soft and 'fluffy as a cloud' little guy. His spots are rather muted and he looks like he could be floating up in the sky with the rest of the billowing clouds. One of my friends, Julia Vaughn, suggested the name and it fits him to a tee. Thank you , Julia!
We have rarely had a foal with this unusual color and we may have to wait just a bit to see if he stays this way, or will actually frost out as he matures. Either way, he is precious and so full of love. That tiny little head just looks up at us as if to say, "I'll kiss you, too, when I finish kissing my mom!" I can hardly keep my hands off of him as he follows me around when I am cleaning his stall.
The weather has been so rainy and dreary since he was born that he has had to stay in the stall for several days. Roxanne was fine with that, as being a first time mom, she was very protective of her first live foal. I don't blame her at all...he is worth protecting. Cloud is cute as they come and he shows his love all the time to Roxanne. They have an unusually close relationship and are constantly hugging and kissing. We could have named him Momma's Boy.
Cloud is very special and he is offered for
sale. Call to set an
appointment to see Partly Cloudy. We don't expect he will be on the for
sale page for very long.
Update! Per Leah at the Miniature Donkey Registry Partly Cloudy is a
light red/gray & white spotted who may later frost out!! Thanks Leah!
Have you ever heard the expression, "Good things come in small packages?" I am now a firm believer in that old saying we've all heard over the years after seeing this darling little jennet that we named Picaboo Sweet. Picaboo is one of the smallest foals we have ever had born at Half Ass Acres. She weighed in at a whooping 19½ lbs. and measured only 19¾" tall at birth. We have only had two other foals smaller in all our years of raising miniature donkeys.
We were anxiously awaiting the birth of Moxie's first foal. We are always concerened with our maiden jennets so Moxie was no exception. She is not a large jennet nor is the sire, Napoleon, a large jack, and Sheena, Moxie's dam, is also a very small jennet. We were not surprised when Picaboo arrived so tiny and perfect.
It did not take us long to name her as I was already playing the peek-a-boo game with her and talking baby talk. She acts like she is as big as all the other donkeys and does the cutest things. We love watching her prance around, throw her perfect head back as she runs and plays and then take command of the rest of the babies in the pasture. She is small but she is mighty. She has such a 'look at me' attitude and we sure don't mind accommodating her.

How do you describe an angel? An angel is beautiful, graceful, gentle, adoring and from God above. I do believe we now have one of God's angels living with us! This little girl is SO beautiful and has every quality anyone could ask for in a spotted jennet. She is practically flawless. Her big ears are arched at the top so that her halo is a perfect fit. I see it every time I look at her and you will too.
Halo has a beautiful wide chest, is very stocky, has a perfect bite, a gorgeous dark 50/50 spot pattern, and dark eye liner all the way around both of her expressive eyes. Her personality is so playful and sweet...just angelic. Halo catches your eye the minute you see her. It is as if she were 'special ordered' just for us. She is everything we breed for in our donkeys and we are looking forward to adding her to our brood jennets after she matures. She could be a show stopper as well, but, we will have to see if I can talk Joe into taking her in the show ring one day.
Napoleon and Gayla certainly passed on all their best qualities to Halo. We will be sure to repeat this breeding of two of our favorite donkeys.

I
had just finished my morning check of all our pregnant jennets. Sissy had cloudy milk. I
quickly came inside to post her update and then started my computer work. Approximately
2 hours later our phone rang and one of the Mare Stare viewers told me we had a jennet in
labor. Much to our surprise Sissy was down and pushing out her foal. We got to her and saw
the foal was hip locked. It took a little working with her to assist getting her foal cleared
from the birth canal. It scared us to death and taught us a great lesson…"never let our
guard down when the milk color changes." We had thought she would not have her foal for
another 24 + hours since her milk was not white.
This beautiful dark brown jennet
is an absolute joy to us. She has entertained us and all our farm visitors since her first
day out of her stall. She is so elegant and full of herself with her high energy and very
outgoing personality. We named her Geisha Girl as she has a defined beauty, entertains us
with her dancing and prancing, and is very unique in so many ways. Her head is very upright,
straight legs, perfect bit, and beautiful distinct color. Trying to get pictures of Geisha
is nearly impossible as she comes running to all who enter her paddock. She greets everyone
and surrounds them with so much attention that one is hardly aware there are other donkeys.
Geisha Girl has personality plus which captures her beauty and the attention of all who
come to our farm. I had to get Joe to help me take her pictures ……she kept getting right
in my face. I could not back away fast enough before she was in my lap and I was laughing
and playing with her rather than taking her pictures for everyone to see.
We should
keep this beautiful girl to be our pasture entertainment and later one of our brood jennets..
Everyone who has visited our farm just loves to watch her perform. She does not have a shy
bone in her body. Unfortunately we cannot keep every foal so we will be offering Geisha
to some lucky new owner to enjoy.

Unbelievable to say
the least! Just when we thought we were so tired we couldn't stay awake another minute,
Sunshine went into labor and blessed us with, yet another, little spotted jennet. Bow had
just foaled about 8 hours sooner. Could this be possible, did this really happen, were they
both flashy spotted girls????? We thought they looked so much alike that I was telling Joe
they could enter a "Best Matched Pair Class."
It has been hard naming our foals
this year as each one has been so unique. It, sometimes, takes a while to be with them and
learn their personalities before we decide on just that perfect name. Many of our Mare Stare
watchers suggested good names but this cute little girl was demanding we look at her, play
with her, snuggle her, pet her, laugh at her and just let her be the frolicking little "kick
up her heals girl" she could be. Her markings were so cute, and she was so fuzzy, that it
was hard to keep our hands off of her while smiling the entire time at her deliberate antics.
Those two big white spots, one on each hip, reminded us of big fluffy pockets, pom poms
, fancy pants, hip pockets, etc. We found ourselves reaching out to pat her bottom right
on those two big white spots every time she'd fly by us saying, "look at my cute ass"…That's
It! We had the name…it had to be Pick Pocket, nothing else would do. Pockets will win your
heart, put a smile on your face, and "Pick Your Pocket" for all the love you can give. Simple
adorable and "sorry" she is not for sale at this time. She is still picking our pockets
for all the love we can give. Sunshine, the mom, really outdid herself this time and gave
us a pocketful of Sunshine!
We
had no intentions of selling this gorgeous girl but we were made an offer we simply could
not refuse!

First of all
a BIG THANK YOU to one of our Mare Stare viewers, Canadianlady, who called to wake us up
and tell us Bow was in labor. We had been watching Sunshine, who had all the signs of going
in to labor, rather than Bow who had no immediate signs of labor. I felt for sure our viewer
had made a huge mistake. Not so…Bow 's water had broken and she was in full labor right
before our eyes. We, hurriedly, ran to the barn and were able get there for the beautiful
birth of a perfect spotted little girl.
You may remember that Bow is the mother
of our adored Pony-Tailed Lass who was born 2 years ago
with no tail. Many of you helped with her doctor bills for her operations during the fund
raiser named "Pin the Tail on the Donkey"
that was organized by my cherished friend, Sandy Dorris. Pony Tail is one special little
girl and a great mascot for us at Half Ass Acres sent to us from Heaven above. She will
remain with us forever. You can now imagine some of our anxiousness about the birth of this
foal. When the foal was clear of her mother, we immediately looked to make sure she had
her tail. There is was, it was gorgeous, Bow was fine, the baby was fine, and all was right
with the world. I told Joe she had the prettiest tail I'd ever seen. Tears of joy, for our
dear Bow and her baby, rolled down my face as I gave all the Praise and Glory to our Lord
for this baby.
We have named Pony Tail's sister, "Gypsy Heart" for her beautifully
colored coat and for all the warmth in our hearts over her birth. She catches
your eye dancing around looking like a beautiful gypsy in all her finery. Her
stocky little body is covered with spots of several colors. We see dark brown,
black, even tones of red. This little spotted girl has it all in one nice solid
package. We can't wait for Bow to take Gypsy out to meet her sister Pony-Tailed
Lass,
and her best friend, Poppy.
It will certainly be a Kodak Moment. That should tell you something…..Gypsy is
NOT for sale at this time.

We
were blessed with a healthy baby born on Easter Sunday. We named him Pasco
as it means 'born on Easter.' Thank you to Asta in Denmark for naming him!
His color appears to be a gray/roan or brown/roan with an intermediate
muzzle and no eye rings. This boy is definately show quality with his heavy
bone and straight legs. He has a tiny head with a perfect bite. We can
put our hand inbetween his front legs his chest is so wide. He measured
not quite 23½" tall so we feel that he will be too tall for
a herd sire. He will
be a gorgeous driving donkey when he matures with his spotlight on his forehead.

Another
little spot…..The minute Gidget started her delivery of this little guy we could see it
was going to be a spot. We watched with great excitement wondering about his spot pattern.
As you can see in his pictures, his spots look as if he was hand painted with a little dab
here, and a little dab there……those dark ears, dark eyes patches, big expressive eyes, dark
hocks, and one dark pastern all make up the little guys “cute factor.” We have said he is
dark gray but he has a few spots that are a bit darker and may just be black. Whatever the
color, he is a real doll.
One of our viewers on Mare Stare suggested we name him
Levi and it suited him to a tee. He surely wears that name very well. I can’t wait to dress
him up in a pair of Levi Jeans. Taking his videos was a hoot. It was like he was playing
a part in a real movie. He kept moving like he could hear the music and even did the “side-pass”
for all of you to see. *See video Levi, 12 hours old* below.
It is so much fun having
these babies so close together this year. We can hardly get our chores done for wanting
to play with them. I should have said them wanting to play with us. It’s one big happy family
in our mom and baby paddock at this time of year.
How
do we begin…Where do we start?....God has blessed us, yet again, with another gorgeous dark
red jennet from Glow. Every time I look at her I have to say, “Be still my heart”, as I
take in all her beauty. Glow is the dam of Little
Whiskey Girl, who was 18 ¾" tall at birth (this was before we weighed our
foals) and Bee Sting, who was 21½"
tall and 23 lbs. at birth, and now Bumbles. What a trio of beautiful red foals Glow has
had for us. Of course, let’s don’t forget the contribution made by Firefly with Bumbles
and Bee. What a great combination!
Taking pictures of Bumbles was a joy. She already
has that show ring stand down pat and the looks to go right in the ring and say, “Look at
me”, I’m here to win.” She has a perfect 10 score from us. Bumbles is compact, straight
legs, and one of the cutest little heads you’ve ever seen. We love her dark, rich, cinnimon
red color so much and marvel at the way she holds that head up so high using those gorgeous
red ears that look like they are lined with white bunny fur.
You may have guessed
it by now, but, she is NOT for sale at this time. She will make an excellent
addition to our brood jennets in a few years, and, if we elect to do so, she
will be yet another show ring beauty. Until that time we will spend our days
admiring her elegance.
What
a way to start the foaling season this year. We could not have asked for a nicer spotted
jack. Sweet Pea and Napoleon certainly stamped him with their fantastic gene pools. I don’t
think we own a sweeter jennet than Sweet Pea and he certainly has his mom’s personality.
Spotz is proudly sporting his dad’s flashy coat as he runs around pestering his mom. She
is being ever so patient with him.
The moment we saw him we knew he was going to
be a show stopper. He has “spotz” in all the right places, and then some. His dark eyes
and eyeliner just add to his beauty. This little man's spots are very dark. Time will tell
if they are black or black/brown. Spotz has such a short stocky body, with nicely marked
straight legs. Look at his adorable, short head….just the kind we love and so hard to find
in a spot!
Ever heard people say to babies, “I’m going to get your sugar, or your
sweet spot?" Well, every spot on this little guy IS sweet. We can hardly keep our hands
off of him.
Sorry but Spotz is “notz” for sale at this time. We may reconsider
to a show home. Serious inquires only please. Call us for more information.
